Entitled

I am an entitled business woman.

That’s right, I said it. I deserve stuff. I work hard. And without a doubt, there are things in this world that I am entitled to.

When did “entitled” become such a negative word?

“Oh, she acts so entitled,” we say.

Well, if she has justified her right to something, then by definition, she is entitled to it.

I am no longer scared of this word but rather empowered by it. I frequently tell clients they are entitled to higher rates for their services, a month off of work …

Vuja De

You’ve heard of deja vu… but what about vuja de?

This is a concept I’d heard of previously that resurfaced while reading Adam Grant’s Originals, where he writes:
“The starting point [of originality] is curiosity: pondering why the default exists in the first place. We’re driven to question defaults when we experience vuja de, the opposite of déjà vu. Déjà vu occurs when we encounter something new, but it feels as if we’ve seen it before. Vuja de is the reverse -  we face something familiar, but w…

No Better Time Than NOW

There is a Chinese Proverb that states,
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”
I often think about this proverb and what it means in business. It takes time for anything to establish roots, grow, and succeed. So the sooner you start the journey and cultivation of whatever IT is that you are starting, the sooner you will see growth and be able to reap the fruits of your labor.

Stop telling yourself that now is not the right time or that you need to accomplis…

Not Your Duck

Some of you may have heard this story from me or someone before so if you have hopefully this will be review.

So often in life there are times in which we spend way too much energy and time on other’s problems, only to realize that it is not my problem.

I love hearing this lesson illustrated through the story of the duck. For those of you who have never heard it you are in for a treat.
One day a man opens his door to see his neighbor there in a panic holding a glass vase with a duck stuck inside. …

Share Your Story

When you visit a company’s website, do you click on the “about us” tab?

It’s common to see a history of the business, mission statement and names of the owners or managers.

But how often do you actually see the story of the meaning of the business and owner?

What is lacking in our lives and in our businesses today is the true story that started the business. The founder’s personal story. Think about how often we see an image of Walt Disney or his quotes used to explain Disney's culture, mission and…

How to Cash in on a Snow Day

Snow days can suck when you work from home or have young children. School gets cancelled (for weeks it feels like) and you are stuck home entertaining or turning a TV on all day as you try to get some sense of sanity and productivity. Here are my best tips to cash in on the snowy obstacles of winter:

#1 Call your Clients

Most likely you have a captive audience on this day. Everyone is either stuck at home or at least not being very productive at their office. Having an outside person to talk to …

Happy 2018!  In this season of new beginnings and resolutions, the key to progress, achieving goals, and success is not doing MORE, but CHANGING what you are doing.

All Good Things Must Come to an End

We are told from the time we were young that all good things must end. Yet there is such negativity around most things that end in life. Death, quitting, termination, break ups, etc. I believe that how we deal with those things can be true test of our character. In business firing people, quitting, termination, business closures are all discussed in a negative standpoint.

What if Closure is Good?

Endings often bring feelings of frustration, anger, confusion, and lack of closure. But if we consid…

My Fight with MileageIQ

Last year I met with both my Business Advisor and my Accountant in one week. Both recommended that rather than tracking my company’s mileage in my current fashion that I download MileageIQ or any mileage tracking app and use that to track my drives and trips. I explained that I am a granola person and that I do not use my data on my phone and I never have location turned on so this app would not work for me. I occasionally researched apps to download and even tried a few but found that I kept ru…
