Relationships In Business

Who said, “You never have a shortage of money-just relationships?” Maybe I heard it in an audiobook, but I suspect it is left over in my brain from years of watching those with “connections” get ahead in life and business.

As a therapist-turned-consultant, one of my specialties is relationships. While my track record for saving marriages speaks for itself, as a coach, I’ve discovered my skills are equally valuable: I am REALLY good at saving the relationship between owner and business.

But the ow…

Business Lent

Did you grow up Catholic? In case you did not, allow me to give you a quick explanation of the Christian Lenten practice. (This is not the religious definition, so forgive me, Father Murphy.) Lent is a 40-day period that begins Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter. This year, it started on March 6th. Lent is intended as a time of reflection and preparation for Easter; however, it’s most well-known as a time where you give something up or make a sacrifice in your own life in some way. Whether you cho…

Fantastic Beasts... and How They Impact Your Business

While watching the awesome movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, my 7-year-old daughter was captivated by a scene featuring an animal that shrinks or grows to match the size of its environment. In the movie, this size-shifting beast has taken over the giant attic of a department store, and the ceiling is in danger of caving in from the weight, threatening the lives of the main protagonists. To save the day, the main character throws a tasty bug into a teapot; the gigantic animal dives i…

Your Team Isn’t Disengaged… They Are Burned Out!

Most supervisors assume that when a team member stops producing, they have become disengaged from their work. However, this assumption is rarely true. In my planning sessions, retreats, and workshops, I have discovered that the majority of these “disengaged” employees actually love their work. They stand behind the company’s mission, and they believe wholeheartedly in what they do.

If anything is the problem, it is that these passionate team members love their work too much. Because they are so …

Follow Up, or Break Up?

It was 4:00pm on a Friday, and I was done. A month had passed since this prospect had expressed interest, and since then, I had emailed this prospect, sent LinkedIn Messages, called them, and texted them. Feeling like I had done more than my fair share of due diligence with follow up, I was about to send that final email saying something like, “Well, I guess you don’t want to work with me.”

(Side note: Don’t send that kind of email. Ever.)

I NEEDED this contract. It would be my largest client …

Canceling Versus Rescheduling: Another Exploration of Mindset and Intention in Business

Recently, I found myself writing emails saying, “I had a client cancel, so I am free.”

I wondered how my word choice was impacting my business, so I started speaking more precisely:

“I had a client reschedule today so I could make myself available.”

While this new statement was more accurate, I still wondered whether the information I was sharing was moving me forward, so I took it a step further.

I cut straight to the chase and just responded with “I would love to see you at…”.

This simple choice…

Networking is for Losers; Establish your Knowwork

When I hear someone talk about a networking group, I kind of cringe.

Networking has earned a dirty title in my book since I have attended so many meetings where individuals are there for the sole purpose of shoving business cards into as many sets of hands as possible. This dive-bomber approach leaves me feeling like there is no interest in starting a genuine and authentic conversation; rather, I feel like a piece of livestock at the fair that is being sized up and judged as to whether I will be…

Entitled

I am an entitled business woman.

That’s right, I said it. I deserve stuff. I work hard. And without a doubt, there are things in this world that I am entitled to.

When did “entitled” become such a negative word?

“Oh, she acts so entitled,” we say.

Well, if she has justified her right to something, then by definition, she is entitled to it.

I am no longer scared of this word but rather empowered by it. I frequently tell clients they are entitled to higher rates for their services, a month off of work …

Vuja De

You’ve heard of deja vu… but what about vuja de?

This is a concept I’d heard of previously that resurfaced while reading Adam Grant’s Originals, where he writes:
“The starting point [of originality] is curiosity: pondering why the default exists in the first place. We’re driven to question defaults when we experience vuja de, the opposite of déjà vu. Déjà vu occurs when we encounter something new, but it feels as if we’ve seen it before. Vuja de is the reverse -  we face something familiar, but w…
